Marilyn taught her children to play piano and violin when they were very young. On hearing her children play, she was asked frequently by friends and colleagues to teach their own children, which she did, subsequently one recommendation followed another. This was the beginning of her professional music teaching career, which has involved teaching Piano, Theory and Violin to both children and adults, in local schools and privately.
Marilyn has taught music theory, piano and violin at Ashcroft Academy, London for the past 22 years, both to students and indeed to their own members of staff, and also for 12 years at Bishopsford Community School, through the Merton Music Foundation.
Marilyn has amassed many years of valuable experience in preparing students for graded exams (up to grade 8), in both theory and practical, with an enviably high success rate. Her youngest successful student was seven and the oldest was in his sixties. Marilyn generally enters students for exams offered by The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. The ABRSM are the largest and most prominent music exam board, with a world-wide reputation. Students can obtain UCAS points from grade 6 and above and these count towards their university places. An additional reward for their efforts!
Marilyn enjoys teaching music to all ages of students, across a wide range of musical genres to both beginners and the more experienced musicians, starting a new instrument. She has also acquired considerable experience of teaching very young children from as young as 4 years who, as is proven often benefit from beginning their musical journey early.
Marilyn teaches at South End Music School on Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday. For information about this tutor’s availability or to make a booking please e-mail, or contact us on 0208 680 9747.
